Getting around Philly

How do I get around Philadelphia?  Transportation

FEET first!! If you are staying in one of the conference hotels, then if you don't have a specific location in mind, your feet are your friend. Center City is a very walkable section of the city and there are many shops, restaurants, museums and other attractions to enjoy! Wear comfortable shoes! Some city streets are still made of cobblestones!!

BUSES, TRAINS and SUBS, Oh my!! If you have a specific place in mind, then SEPTA (South Eastern Pennsylvania Trans. Auth.) has a wonderful online program to help you plan your trip: Let SEPTA help you plan your trip!

Eating in Philly!

Not sure of where to go? Being such a diverse city, Philadelphia has almost every type of food imaginable.

A few suggestions:

Click here to find a restaurant, then scroll down and click on the “Location” tab:

  • If you don’t have a car, Center City is your best bet because there is a lot to do within walking distance especially in Old City and around South St. Be sure to check the SEPTA schedule and/or make sure you have cab fair to get back to your hotel (cabs tend to be more expensive) if you are going someplace that is not within walking distance of your hotel.
  • If you have a car, then Philadelphia is your oyster!

Don’t find what you’re looking for there? Do a search on philly.com

Penn's Landing

Penn's Landing is the waterfront area of the Center City along the Delaware River section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is so named since the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, was storied to have first docked here in 1682. In actuality, William Penn landed at what is now Penn St & 2nd in Chester, PA. (The true site is currently in use by the Kimberly Clark/Scott's Towels Papermill.) The area is bounded by Front Street to the west, the Delaware River to the east, Spring Garden Street to the north, and Washington Avenue to the south, and is primarily focused on the Christopher Columbus Boulevard (Delaware Avenue) corridor.

Development of area is handled by the Penn’s Landing Corporation. The corporation is a non-profit organization, quasi-public corporation that was established in 1970 to manage the publicly owned land on the central waterfront on behalf of the City of Philadelphia and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Penn's Landing serves as the site for several events in the city. The two main facilities at Penn’s Landing are The Great Plaza, located along the Delaware River at Christopher Columbus Boulevard and Chestnut Street, and Festival Pier, on Christopher Columbus Boulevard and Spring Garden Street. Plans are being developed for two casinos (with licenses granted by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board) along the riverfront, with one being owned by the Planet Hollywood parent company.[1]

A number of historic ships are moored at Penn's Landing. The barque Moshulu is moored there as a floating restaurant, the USS Becuna and the USS Olympia (C-6) are open for touring as part of the Independence Seaport Museum, and the barquentine Gazela and tugboat Jupiter are moored there by the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild.

The RiverLink Ferry links Penn's Landing with the Camden, New Jersey waterfront.
